🧭Our Journey

A Non-Profit Organisation Is Born

A Non-Profit Organization Is Born
2007
Three coastal and marine professionals came together with one goal to create an organization rooted in coastal realities, led by coastal people. This vision gave birth to COMRED, a homegrown initiative dedicated to community-centered marine management.
The Growth of the Organization
2008-09
COMRED is awarded its first grant to research the role of communities in resource management along the Kenyan coast, culminating in the publication of a book.
COMRED recruits three associates who later join the board of directors and employ its first three staff (Project Manager, Project Assistant, Accounts Assistant).
COMRED implements the EU-funded Kilifi Integrated Project (KIP) that transformed solid waste management (waste recycling) in Kilifi Town Council; improved fish nutrition in one village through mariculture; restored mangroves along Kilifi creek; and rehabilitated quarries in Kilifi County (the district).

Building A Sustainable Future
2022
Building A Sustainable Future
2022-present
Guided by our Theory of Change, COMRED focuses on three levers of impact:
🌿 Healthy ecosystems — restoring mangroves, reefs, and seagrasses.
👥 Empowered communities — strengthening governance through Beach Management Units (BMUs) and leadership training.
💡 Sustainable livelihoods — expanding value chains in fisheries, apiculture, and eco-credit. Together, these form the foundation for long-term coastal resilience and blue economy growth in Kenya and the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region.
Kenyan-led, Kenyan-founded,
coastal-based organisations
COMRED was established in 2006 as a non-profit organisation, with the mission to nurture practical solutions to problems facing coastal and marine environments and communities for sustainable development. We work with a host of partners and associates and have a strong focus on training students and interns as future practitioners.
From our headquarters in Mombasa, we work along Kenya’s coast and beyond Kenyan borders into the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region.
Our activities broadly address conservation and research of coastal and marine resources; sustainable urban development; capacity building, particularly of communities; and assistance to communities in the design and implementation of projects, as well as mentorship and monitoring.
