A Sneak peak of the Ramisi Forest Association

The launch of the Buda Block Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) 2023-2027 and the signing of the Forest Management Agreement (FMA) between Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Ramisi Community Forest Association (RACOFA) on July 27, 2023, signified the completion of a long yet worthwhile process that began in March 2023. The plan, as required by law, allows for sustainable utilization and management of forest resources while contributing to the livelihoods of the forest-adjacent communities. The FMA, which outlines the user rights of the communities, guides the implementation of the PFMP.

It's worth noting that RACOFA was accorded twenty-one (21) user rights, such as the establishment of tree nurseries for both mangroves and terrestrial forests, crab farming, scientific research, and marine waste management. These rights will help communities enhance and diversify their livelihoods and motivate them further to conserve the forest and its environs.

The PFMP provides a structured way of conserving forest resources, and it is expected that it will attract more strategic partners through its implementation. In addition, the process of developing the PFMP was participatory, thereby creating a sense of ownership and stewardship among community members.

The launch of the PFMP is a milestone for COMRED, as this is the first PFMP that COMRED has supported in its preparation and development. The formation of RACOFA and the launch of its PFMP are in line with COMRED’s strategic goal of supporting the conservation of coastal and marine resources.
